The 2008 Annual Education Luncheon Featuring Tom Siebel

The BizWorld Foundation Board Members, Tom Siebel, and BizKids from North Star Academy (Redwood City, CA) at the Education Luncheon
The BizWorld Foundation was honored to have Tom Siebel, Founder of Siebel Systems as our featured guest for the Annual Education Luncheon, highlighting the need for teaching entrepreneurship and business in elementary schools around the world. Joined by Tim Draper, Founder of Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Siebel - an entrepreneur himself - focused on the current market trends and opportunities for entrepreneurship in a global economy.

As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, this year’s luncheon featured the World’s Largest Friendship Bracelet. Children from around the world submitted their friendship bracelets after completing the BizWorld curriculum. In an exciting, edge-of-your-seat live auction, the audience bet on the unique bracelet which fetched a whopping $10,000. All proceeds from the live auction will support The BizWorld Foundation’s programs. Thank you to our sponsors and guests that attended and supported the luncheon.

Teacher Spotlight: Teresa Murray

Teacher Teresa Murray with her daughter
Teresa Murray teaches Business Leadership at The Charter School at Waterstone in Homestead, Florida and has taught the BizWorld program for two years. This fall Teresa mobilized 85 eighth grade students to participate in The BizWorld Foundation’s World’s Largest Friendship Bracelet Challenge. Going above and beyond, Ms. Murray dedicated two weeks of her classroom time to making over 1,500 friendship bracelets-more than any other participating school!

Ms. Murray has been teaching in various educational settings for over 20 years. When she started teaching her business leadership class, Teresa chose to integrate the BizWorld curriculum because of its “hands-on, differentiated approach that can’t be beat.” When asked how students respond to the curriculum, Ms. Murray responded, “The kids just soak it up for its creative approach to education.” Keep up the great work Teresa!

Celebrating the 8th Annual Grand Prix

Left to Right- Winning Teams from Informatica, DFJ, and Palo Alto Investors

The BizWorld Annual Grand Prix has become a signature event of The BizWorld Foundation experience. Each year, companies take to the track to prove their driving skills —all while supporting an incredibly worthy cause.

This year the stakes were higher as a select group of sponsors tested their driving skills in the first ever “Race the Pro” match-up against Johannes van Overbeek, a professional Porsche driver. Zipping around hair-pin turns our corporate sponsors were put to the test. In an exciting finish, Coulter Mulligan, driving for the DFJ Riskmasters team, took the lead crossing the finish line and beating the pro!

BizWorld supporters placed friendly wagers on for “Fastest Lap” and “Slowest Lap” with all proceeds benefiting The BizWorld Foundation’s programs. The evening culminated in an exciting finish with winners – DFJ, Informatica and Palo Alto Investors. The event raised important funding for BizWorld programs! Thank you to all of our sponsors and fans, and we’ll see you in May!

Wachovia Foundation announces The BizWorld Foundation as a Key Partner

Camp BizWorld at Wachovia Headquarters
The BizWorld Foundation is honored to have been chosen as a Key Partner by The Wachovia Foundation. As a non-profit organization with a shared mission The BizWorld Foundation received a grant in the amount of $25,000 to support a new initiative, “Partnership for Innovative Education – Building Better Communities”. With a focus on the Bay Area, the grant will fund teacher trainings and Camp BizWorld. Working with Wachovia’s Volunteer Council, volunteer employees will participate in teaching the concepts of BizWorld and BizWiz programs to local school children in the Bay Area. On November 11th and 12th, Wachovia hosted the partnership’s first Camp BizWorld at Wachovia’s headquarters in Oakland, California. Students from a local charter school, Civicorps Elementary, benefited from the partnership by participating in the two day event. Students and volunteers left Camp BizWorld invigorated and excited about their company’s successes - a true entrepreneurial experience! Thank you Wachovia Foundation!
McKesson Corporation Teaches BizWorld

McKesson Volunteer shopping at the Sales Bazaar

This past summer, The BizWorld Foundation was invited to teach the BizWorld program as part of the Summer Youth Development Program at the McKesson Corporation Headquarters in San Francisco. The Summer Youth Development Program provided students with an eight-week paid summer internships which included seminars on job training and career development.

Long-time BizWorld teacher and supporter Marian Connelly from St. Cecilia School in San Francisco taught the program, bringing her enthusiasm for BizWorld to a new group of students. “It’s great to see BizWorld being taught outside of the traditional classroom environment,” said Ana Blanco, Director of Development. “The students did a fantastic job of working together and applying the real-life skills they learned in the BizWorld program to their internships at McKesson.”

Board Spotlight: Michela Alioto-Pier

The BizWorld Foundation is pleased to announce our newest member of the National Board of Directors, Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier, representing District 2 of the City of San Francisco.

Appointed to the Board of Supervisors in January 2004 by Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Alioto-Pier is a nationally known disability rights advocate. She later worked for Vice President Al Gore, as an advisor on domestic policy matters and a liaison to the Department of Health & Human Services.

Supervisor Alioto-Pier has received numerous awards and honors, including seconding the nomination of Vice President Al Gore at the Democratic National Convention in August of 1996. She has been named one of the top 21 up-and-coming women leaders in the country by Ms. Magazine, she is a Henry Crowne Fellow with the Aspen Institute, and she was a delegate to the Lifetime Summit on Women in 1997. Supervisor Alioto-Pier has been profiled in nationwide magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Time, and People. She was named one of "the ten people expected to have the greatest impact on the Bay Area in the early part of the 21st century" by the San Francisco Examiner.
