BizKid DaShae Whitney and BizWorld Staff Ring the Closing Bell of the New York Stock Exchange

BizWorld celebrated an organizational milestone this December when the Foundation was chosen to ring the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange. It was nothing but smiles for DaShae Whitney, a 5th grade BizWorld student from North Carolina who was chosen to be the lucky bell ringer at the event. To assist DaShae were BizWorld Founder, Tim Draper; BizWorld CEO, Catherine Hutton, North Carolina State Treasurer Richard Moore, Angelo, Gordon & Co. CEO, John Angelo; and Merrill Lynch's Vice Chairman Public Markets, Paul Critchlow and First Vice President of Global Philanthropy, Eddy Bayardelle.

The event following, which kicked off BizWorld’s expansion into New York City, took place on the trading floor where Catherine Hutton moderated a panel between Paul Critchlow, Tim Draper and Catherine Kinney, President and Co-COO of the New York Stock Exchange; who shared their thoughts on education and the importance of teaching kids how to manage their money.

Also on hand were BizWorld teachers Nicole Gray, Margo Dolittle, Mathew Jungblut and Temy Mancusi-Ungaro and BizKids from the Bronx Preparatory Charter School, who offered their handmade BizWorld bracelets to the traders as they punched in the numbers of the day.

“There is nothing more important than for youngsters to gain the knowledge and real-world skills that will enable them to succeed in our global economy,” said Paul Critchlow.

To continue expansion into New York, the BizWorld Foundation has launched a New York Advisory Council, which will hold its first meeting in March 2006. Stay tuned for more updates from BizWorld New York!

San Francisco Mayor Teaches the BizWorld Program

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom checks out goods at the BizWorld sales bazaar.
This past September, San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom, teamed up with BizWorld staffers Jason Orbaugh and Cassie Heaton to teach the BizWorld program to students at the Gloria R. Davis Middle School in Hunter’s Point, San Francisco. The mayor, an entrepreneur himself, who opened his first business, PlumpJack Wines, in 1992, prior to his career in politics, spoke to the students about sales strategy and business ethics.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer these kids the chance to learn from real business leaders,” said Catherine Hutton, CEO/Executive Director of the BizWorld Foundation, “Mayor Newsom is a great role model for the Gloria R. Davis students.”

Excited to see their very own mayor teaching a class, the Gloria R. Davis students learned a valuable lesson in business strategy, summed up by one student: “Shoot for the moon!”

BizWorld California Luncheon

BizWorld Founder Tim Draper interviews Founder and CEO of Salesforce.com, Marc Benioff
BizWorld held its second annual California Education Luncheon this December, featuring the Founder and CEO of Salesforce.com, Marc Benioff, and BizWorld Founder, Tim Draper. Showcasing BizWorld’s Bay Area achievements, the event honored BizWorld teachers Mike Harris and VanCedric Williams, who have been influential in supporting the program in their areas; and their students from North Star Academy and Gloria R. Davis Middle School, respectively, who performed their commercials before an enthusiastic crowd.

Fielding questions from guest interviewer, Angel Investor’s Founder, Ron Conway, the students spoke about their BizWorld companies, noting what worked and what didn’t. “We tried to turn the biggest profit,” remarked one VP of Finance, nonchalantly. Others shared their job mottos and company slogans.

Making a surprise guest appearance at the event was the original BizKid, Jessica Draper, whose question, “Daddy, what do you do at work everyday?” prompted her father Tim to launch BizWorld in her third grade class. Jessica, now a junior at UCLA, spoke about her own BizWorld experience, and reminisced, “Each student engaged in BizWorld in their own way. One friend, who had never worn anything to school other than a t-shirt and Giants baseball hat, dressed up everyday of BizWorld in a full business suit and tie and never came to class without her briefcase. Other kids found their expertise in marketing, finance, design and sales, and BizWorld as the world knows it was born.”

Proceeds from the event will support the BizWorld Foundation.

BizWorld Foundation Sends BizWorld Kits to Victims of Hurricane Katrina
“Can you imagine losing every teaching resource you ever created or purchased? Everything you ever used to teach a unit?”

This was the question posed by Judy McIntyre, the Supervisor of Gifted and Talented Programs for the Louisiana State Department of Education, who has been struggling to find resources after her teachers lost everything in the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

It is an all too painful reality for many of the teachers caught in the Hurricane’s aftermath. And while it will take years to rebuild the hard work and love put in by the many Louisiana teachers, the BizWorld Foundation has been working to do its part, donating BizWorld kits to the Louisiana State Department of Education. Read how McIntyre responded:

“Creativity and problem solving are what life is all about in Louisiana after the storms. Many teachers lost everything when the storms destroyed their homes and schools. The BizWorld kits will put a much needed resource into teachers' hands. The teachers will not only teach the students how to start up and run their own business, but they will also help them understand how important friends are in times of need. The BizWorld Kits contain the supplies for students to start their own companies and make friendship bracelets as their product. For displaced students, making new friends and keeping in touch with old friends has become a primary issue. The friendship bracelets will provide a wonderful tie to social and emotional issues connected to this natural disaster and an opportunity for teachers and students to discuss their feelings about starting over in a new place or rebuilding in an old place. Thanks BizWorld for helping us help ourselves in more ways than one!"
