Dear Educator,

Welcome to 2010! We hope that you are entering an inspiring new semester after a celebratory and rejuvenating winter break. With the full launch of BizWiz 2.0, and BizMovie 1.0 right around the corner, together with the addition of four new BizWorld Foundation team members, the new year promises to be full of excitement and growth for all of us at The BizWorld Foundation!

However, before we completely say good-bye to 2009, we want to take time to recognize some of the outstanding contributions that teachers have made to BizWorld, BizWiz and BizMovie throughout the fall semester. The feedback, support, and shared expertise of teachers throughout the country have played a significant role in helping our Foundation's team develop BizMovie, fully revise BizWiz, and connect us with alliances such as Global Entrepreneurship Week. Thank you for your continual support and involvement with our programs and staff team!

Throughout our newsletter, you will find specific examples of teachers' contributions to our programs, as well as exciting news about our Foundation team:

Sincerely,

April Bond

Each year, The BizWorld Foundation participates in Global Entrepreneurship Week, a worldwide initiative that brings countries across six continents together "to inspire young people to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity." Check out more about Global Entrepreneurship Week here! This year Global Entrepreneurship Week was held November 16th-22nd, 2009.

In recognition of the event, The BizWorld Foundation organized teachers from across the country to teach BizWorld, The BizWorld Foundation's entrepreneurship curriculum. We would like to give a special shout out to the following teachers for going the extra step to send in BizWorld stories and pictures from their Global Entrepreneurship week activities. You can find quotes from their stories on the right scroll of this newsletter!

Heidi Mitchell, Waxahachie Prep, Waxahachie, TX
Joanne Carbotti, Roselle Park Middle, Colonia, NJ

Newest Members of The BizWorld Foundation Team

Introducing: Fred Bush, James Lee, Peyton Pickenpaugh and Tiffany LaRue

Fred Bush
Fred Bush has joined The BizWorld Foundation as the new President of Development. He is a widely respected executive in The US and abroad, Fred has a unique combination of diplomatic, political and business experience in both government and the private sector. For 11 years, 1998 to 2009, Fred was Associate Director of the Woodrow Wilson Center, part of the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C. He has served under three Presidents, Ford, Reagan, and Bush 41. Fred was Assistant Secretary of Commerce, and Deputy Chief of Staff to Vice President Bush. He was Appointed US Ambassador and Commissioner-General to the Seville, Spain EXPO ’92, by President George H. W. Bush. Fred has raised over 600 million dollars for politicians, political entities, and non-profits. He is married to the former Catherine Murphy; they have four children and now reside in San Francisco, CA.

James Lee
James Lee has joined The BizWorld Foundation as the new Vice President Programs. James has a deep background in both the non-profit and business communities, having served as a non-profit executive and also built a business as a private sector entrepreneur. Most recently, James was with The Junior Statesmen Foundation, which teaches an experiential civic engagement curriculum to high school students, where he served as Program Director and also Director of Alumni Relations and Development. In addition to wide-ranging non-profit board and consultant roles, James ran an antique import and retail business for many years in the San Francisco area and worked for McKinsey & Company as a strategy consultant to Fortune 500 companies. James is a graduate of Princeton University and lives in Oakland with his wife Annie. He is very excited about combining his program management, educational leadership, and entrepreneurial skills in order to bring the BizWorld curriculum to a broad range of young people.

Peyton Pickenpaugh
Peyton has joined the BizWorld Foundation as the new Education Coordinator! She is an experienced educator with a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Before joining our team, she taught in Oakland and Osaka, Japan as both a 5th grade classroom teacher and a 7th grade Humanities instructor. Peyton decided to join our team after seeing first-hand how implementing entrepreneurial programs provided her students with the confidence and skills needed to succeed as adults. She is very excited about teaching and helping develop the BizWorld curriculum so that students can develop financial literacy and economic understanding at an early age.

Tiffany LaRue
Tiffany joined the BizWorld Foundation in October 2009 as our new Administrative Assistant. She had long been interested in working in education and the non-profit field. After graduating college, Tiffany’s love of the Spanish language took her to Spain where she had the opportunity to try her hand at teaching English. She loved the experience of teaching abroad, but also desired to develop her skills in the business field. The BizWorld Foundation was a perfect find for her because it was a combination of the many things Tiffany was seeking in a job. Tiffany is especially excited about the devotion that her colleagues bring to work and is driven by The BizWorld Foundation’s goal of giving young students tools that will help them shape their future!

Global Entrepreneurship
Week Teacher and Student Accolades

"Our school has fantastic parent volunteers who step in to play various roles throughout the semester. This adds so much value to what our students take away when they see their parents taking an active role in the program."
-Heidi Mitchell, Teacher,
Waxahachie Prep, Waxahachie, TX

"Many of my students plan to be entrepreneurs in the near future and this activity gives them first- hand knowledge of how a real business works. They must employ good teamwork skills, they have to compromise and be willing to use techniques that their Marketing Expert or President might expect them to engage in."
-Joanne Carbotti, Teacher, Roselle Park Middle, Colonia, NJ

"Many of our students have seen first-hand how their parents make ends meet by selling food or mowing lawns for a living. We have parents who are mechanics, painters, bakers and those who sell products like Avon, or Mary Kay. Through this BizWorld project I have seen kids want to assist their parents in their business endeavors by making flyers for the business and thinking about ideas to market their product."
-Karla Duran, Teacher, KIPP: Aspire, San Antonio, TX

"My favorite part about BizWorld has been learning the process of starting a business. I like learning the steps that successful businesses went through. My mother has recently started a business and I find that process interesting. I like learning how every business starts and all the work they go through. BizWorld has been great so far and very fun."
-Halen, Student, Taylor School, Santa Maria, CA
