Celebrate National Entrepreneurship Week 2007

Be a part of the First Annual National Entrepreneurship Week.  Join teachers across the nation and teach BizWorld from February 24 – March 3 to celebrate the power of entrepreneurship.

The BizWorld Foundation, along with 600 organizations, have partnered together to host a variety of events and initiatives throughout the week to encourage entrepreneurship education. Teachers across the nation are preparing to begin teaching the BizWorld program Monday, February 26th in support of Entrepreneurship Week.

Throughout the month of February, the BizWorld Foundation will be hosting educator workshops entitled, “An Introduction to Project-Based Learning” in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, and Charlotte. Be sure to visit our Web site to find a workshop near you and sign up.  Send us an email to let us know if you’d like to have a workshop at your school.

Entrepreneurship Week has drawn a lot of attention to schools and community events supporting the initiative.   Take this opportunity to highlight your class and school and show the community how you are making a difference in the lives of your students by using best practices and cutting edge materials to promote student achievement.

We’ve developed quick tips and suggestions on how to attract media and volunteers while you teach BizWorld.  Click on the link below to find ways to get media and community members into your classroom during Entrepreneurship Week.

Spread the Word

Spread the Word - Young entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of the economy of the future.  Our goal is to inspire young people to believe in their own entrepreneurial potential while promoting education, teamwork, leadership and critical thinking skills.  Young people have a natural desire for the independence and control that come with owning a business and being their own boss.  According to research conducted by the Kaufman Foundation, more than 41 percent of individuals ages 9-12 say they would like to start their own businesses.  By exposing students to entrepreneurship, they not only become invested in the educational process but begin to understand the relevance of traditional school subjects as they apply to the real world.

Teacher Spotlight
Maureen Ferry
7th Grade Teacher, Lee Mathson Middle School
Maureen Ferry, a 7th grade Math, Science and Leadership teacher at Lee Mathson Middle School in San Jose, California, taught BizWorld for the first time.  Maureen learned of BizWorld through a Teach for America news blast and immediately implemented the program in her Leadership class this past November and December.  This is Maureen’s second year as a teacher and she is thrilled with the program.  Maureen said, “I truly think my students developed an understanding and appreciation of concepts that some adults don’t even fully understand!”

When Maureen first introduced BizWorld to her 7th grade class, her students were a bit skeptical because they thought it was just about making friendship bracelets.  However, their attitudes changed when they realized the companies were competing against one another.  Maureen noticed a difference in her students when they started negotiating with the venture capitalist.  “All my students were totally invested in doing well for their companies, and doing a great job with their specific positions.”

After evaluating BizWorld with her class, Maureen’s students said they didn’t realize how challenging it can be working with a group of people, but at the same time how rewarding it is to reach your goals with the same people.  They were also impressed with BizWorld after Maureen told them that she didn’t learn many of the concepts that BizWorld teaches until her Economics classes at the University of Michigan.

Maureen definitely plans on teaching BizWorld again.  She said, “With so much attention given to standardized test scores, little time is given to experiential learning and application in many schools today.  BizWorld allowed the kids to learn entrepreneurial and business concepts through experience and application, which was so meaningful."

The BizWorld Foundation proudly introduces its newest partner, myStudentBiz, an organization dedicated to help high school and college entrepreneurs get their first actual business experience.  Students apply and are appointed as Marketing Reps and manage and operate their own Chipwich street vending carts.  Students sell Chipwich snacks to local businesses in their neighborhoods and receive a profit on every sale.  Trust us, the products are delicious!
Students go through training focused on learning how to make a great impression, close the sale, manage their biz, order and stock, track profits as well as building relationships and their network.  Everyone receives a Kit of Power Goods, giving the budding entrepreneurs everything needed to start their biz. MyStudentBiz also provides an advisor to help each student develop contacts and leads.  This is an idea starting point as there is no inventory to buy and no recruitment involved.

The BizWorld program gives future myStudentBiz entrepreneurs the best foundation of business and money management, encouraging students to pursue their individual potential.
