BizWorld provides students an opportunity to identify and work through real-world problems. We talk so much of problem solving in mathematics, but fail to assist students in their development in a set of problem solving skills for real-world problems. The BizWorld environment provides the student a safe environment in which to learn and test such skills. -Joey Foote, President, Utah Association of Elementary School Principals

Educator Spotlight: Robyn Ulzheimer and Lauri Posner from PS 87, New York, NY

Lauri Posner and Robyn Ulzheimer
Robyn and Lauri are fifth grade teachers at Public School (PS) 87 in New York, NY, where they have been teaching the BizWorld program since 2001. They recently sat down with the BizWorld Foundation to share their perspective on the BizWorld experience.

“I liked that [my students] learn about the many aspects of running a business and that they have to work cooperatively in order for their companies to be successful,” Lauri indicated, when asked to describe the value BizWorld brings to her classroom.

Robyn added, “The student investment in the curriculum is high and that reduced any problems with classroom management. When they are engaged in the activities, they want to be successful in their jobs/companies.”

After years of practice, Lauri and Robyn explained that they schedule a two week block in late January or early February in an effort to coincide with the Valentines Day holiday, during which they actually sell their products as a school fundraiser. They organize the materials by giving each company a color coded folder. “We make the students/companies responsible for all of their supplies. Even scissors handles and tape dispensers are color coded to match the colored folders,” remarked Robyn.

While the students/companies are preparing to make their pitch to the venture capitalist, Robyn and Lauri take the opportunity to discuss the importance of making a good first impression and stress the value of eye contact, a hand shake, and demonstrating confidence in your product and your team.

“The BizWorld program is designed to be flexible,” remarked Lauri. “Incorporating additional supplementary information is a great way to expand the curriculum. For example, we have each company choose two or three stocks to follow for a few weeks to reinforce the stock market.” They also supplement the program with content related readings on topics that include investing, business, unions, child labor and working conditions, and use the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory as a case study. This example illustrates the first large scale strike of women workers in the country and of one of the worst industrial disasters in American history
.

When asked to share one of their favorite stories, they told us about Christopher, a current fifth grade student who recently told them he couldn’t wait until vacation was over. When Robyn asked him why, he said, “I can’t wait to start BizWiz.” The children were recently told that we would be starting a new program from the BizWorld Foundation after the break and they were very excited! Robyn and Lauri are still planning to teach BizWiz after spring break.

Thank you Robyn and Lauri for sharing your BizWorld experience!

BizWorld in Fortune Small Business

Teaching Business Basics to Kids: Today a lemonade stand. Tomorrow, the world! A nonprofit is helping develop entrepreneurship in children.

By Elaine Pofeldt, FORTUNE Small Business contributing writer

NEW YORK (FORTUNE Small Business) - Are children too young to learn to be entrepreneurs?

Tim Draper, a partner in the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson, doesn't think so. Draper believes so strongly in exposing youngsters to running a business that he created the BizWorld Foundation, a nonprofit that teaches the fundamentals to youngsters from 8 to 13 years old.

"To create great entrepreneurs, you have to have children explore the world," says Draper. Educators are responding to Draper's message. The number of classrooms offering BizWorld's ten-hour enrichment program jumped to 1,279 by December 2005, a 67 percent increase from the previous year, says Catherine Hutton, BizWorld's CEO and executive director.

Nicole Gray, dean and enrichment teacher at Bronx Preparatory Charter School in New York City, said that when she tried to persuade students to enroll in BizWorld, their reaction was, "Eeew, business." But, she said, those who tried it loved it.

Bronx Preparatory student Fausto Il Defonso, 12, said it sparked his interest in starting a company someday, “A name-brand business like Nike."
