GAVIN NEWSOM AND TIM DRAPER TEACH HUNTER’S POINT YOUTH ABOUT THE REAL BIZWORLD
Mayor Newsom and Tim Draper team up to teach kids business and money management
SAN FRANCISCO (September 8, 2005) – San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom, and leading Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist, Tim Draper, will team up to teach students at the Gloria R. Davis Middle School in Hunter’s Point the importance of business and smart money management. The event, which will begin at 10:30 am, will showcase the BizWorld program, the namesake program of the San Francisco based BizWorld Foundation, which teaches entrepreneurship and business skills to students in third through eighth grades.
Designed to teach students the money management skills that many were not learning at home, the original BizWorld program was developed in 1997 as a pilot program in the Bay Area. To date, BizWorld has reached over 105,000 students in all 50 states and in 84 countries.
“Schools are under pressure to produce results with fewer resources than before, while at the same time finding ways to motivate their students. In BizWorld, kids apply what they learn in school to real world situations, so they understand how school prepares them for life,” said Catherine Hutton, Executive Director of the BizWorld Foundation.
As participants in the weeklong program, the Hunter’s Point students will learn fundamental business basics as they make spending and investment decisions, discuss debt vs. equity funding, will be paid salaries and will pay rent. As part of the event program, Mayor Newsom will speak to the importance of financial literacy in schools, and Tim Draper will be on hand to talk about the value of entrepreneurship education.
“As an entrepreneur himself, Mayor Newsom is a great role model for the Gloria R. Davis students,” remarked Hutton, “we are thrilled to be able to offer these kids the chance to learn from real business leaders!”
